Cyanine Recording Dye Technology
DVD-R is a write-once format compatible with most DVD-RW recorders and DVD players. It uses cyanine-based recording dyes, which appear violet on the recording side of the disc.
During recording, the laser heats the dye layer to around 200°C, permanently forming pits that store data. A reflective layer reads this pattern during playback, and because the dye is permanently altered, DVD-R discs cannot be reused.
Recordable DVD-Rs feature a spiral pregroove that guides the laser during recording. A controlled wobble in this groove provides timing information to maintain accurate tracking and focus, while moulded address data supports precise write operations.
Higher Capacity Disc Structure
DVD-R achieves higher storage capacity than CD-R by using smaller pits and tighter track spacing, allowing more data to fit on the disc. Writing these smaller pits requires a 650nm red laser and a higher-precision optical system.
Each DVD-R consists of two bonded 0.6mm polycarbonate layers, creating a stable 1.2mm disc. One layer contains the recording dye and reflective surface, while the second provides mechanical stability and protection.
Bonding is achieved using either hot-melt adhesive or UV-cured lacquer, ensuring disc integrity and long-term durability.

The DVD-R sandwich structure protects the data layer while allowing the laser to pass through only 0.6mm of polycarbonate, enabling a tighter focus and the creation of much smaller pits than on CD-R media. To achieve this precision, laser power is carefully controlled and rapidly adjusted during recording to regulate pit size, prevent overheating, and ensure accurate data writing.

Precision Recording & OPC Calibration
DVD-R recording requires precise laser control due to the smaller pit size. During writing, laser power is carefully modulated to prevent overheating and ensure accurate data formation.
To maintain consistency, Optimum Power Calibration (OPC) performs test writes and automatically adjusts laser power for the media in use. This helps deliver reliable recording results across different drives and operating conditions.
